SA records 2,800 new Covid-19 cases

The majority of new cases were from Gauteng (40%), followed by Western Cape (19%).

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 2,800 new Covid-19 cases in the country. 


"This increase represents an 8.4% positivity rate," says the NICD in a statement. 


The majority of new cases were from Gauteng (40%), followed by Western Cape (19%). 


Kwa-Zulu Natal accounted for 13%; Mpumalanga accounted for 7%; North West accounted for 6%; Free State and Limpopo each accounted for 5% respectively; Eastern Cape accounted for 4%; and the  Northern Cape accounted for 2% of new cases.

Due to the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health (NDoH), there may be a backlog of Covid-19 mortality cases reported, they noted. 


On Friday, 343 deaths were reported of which 4 occurred in the preceding 24–48 hours. 


This brings the total fatalities to 98,298  to date.


There has been an increase of 104 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
