South Africa has recorded 17 489 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, more than 5 000 higher than the cases reported the day before.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says the increase represents a 31.0% positivity rate, with a total of 56 362 tests conducted in the last 24 hours.
However, despite the increase, the daily total for Wednesday remains lower than the average number of new cases per day over 7 preceding days.
A total of 2 236 805 cases have been identified in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
“With the current disruption of some COVID-19 testing sites in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, individuals who have COVID-19 symptoms who can’t access testing facilities are asked to try and limit the transmission of the virus by taking precautions and to quarantine if possible,” says the NICD.
A further 453 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 65 595.
Gauteng has recorded 7 981 new infections.
“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (46%), followed by Western Cape 17% and Limpopo with 10%.”
The institute says there has been an increase of 787 hospital admissions and in this regard, there are currently 17 560 people receiving medical treatment in both public and private facilities.
Despite the disruptions caused by the large scale unrest, 146 230 vaccines were administered on Wednesday.
