SA records over 16 000 new Covid-19 cases

South Africa has recorded 16 302 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s total identified cases to 2 195 599.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said on Sunday evening that the latest increase represents a 30.4% positivity rate.
Gauteng province is still the epicentre with 8 543 new cases.
The province accounts for 52% of the country’s cases, followed by the Western Cape with 12% while KwaZulu Natal accounted for 9%.
A further 151 Covid-related deaths have been reported, bringing the total number of fatalities to 64 289.
The NICD said 459 people more people have been admitted to hospitals in the past 24 hours.
A total of 16 341 people are currently receiving treatment in public and private hospitals.
