Out of 28 703 new tests conducted since the previous Covid-19 report, close to 3 000 tested positive.
This brings the tally of active cases to 35 054.
According to the latest statistics released by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Wednesday, recoveries are holding steady 92%.
But the picture in the Eastern Cape remains grim as the province continues to record the largest number of fatalities.
The Free State also recorded high numbers over the past 24 to 48 hours.
“Regrettably, 123 more Covid-19 related deaths have been reported: Eastern Cape 35, Free State 31, Gauteng 4, Kwa-Zulu Natal 3, Limpopo 7, North West 31 and Western Cape 12,” Mkhize reported.
“This brings the total deaths to 20 556. Of the 123 deaths 17 reportedly occurred in past 24 hours: 4 in Eastern Cape, 2 in Gauteng, 11 in Western Cape.”
