SA sees slight uptick in new Covid-19 cases

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 3 699 new Covid-19 cases in the latest 24 hours reporting cycle, showing a slight uptick in daily new infections

This brings the country’s total number of laboratory-confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 3 648 968.


The latest increase on Wednesday represents a 9.7% positivity rate.


Gauteng has reported an increase of 1 328 new infections.


“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (36%), followed by Western Cape (17%). Kwa-Zulu Natal accounted for 12%; Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 9% respectively; Free State accounted for 6%; Limpopo accounted for 5%; Eastern Cape accounted for 4%, and Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today’s new cases,” says the NICD in a statement. 


Meanwhile, the National Department of Health continues to report a backlog of Covid-19 mortality cases due to the ongoing audit exercise by the department.


It has reported 89 deaths and of these, seven of which occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours.


 This brings the total fatalities to 97 520.


There has been an increase of 78 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 3 714 people currently admitted in both public and private health facilities.


On the vaccine front, 72 296 Covid-19 vaccines were administered on Wednesday.
