SA sovereignty not for sale - ANC

The ANC has noted a letter sent by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to the Secretary of State in the United States, Anton Blinken.

The DA also wrote to several other countries, including the European Union (EU), appealing for them to help provide resources for independent domestic observers ahead of the 29 May elections.

A first letter was sent under the auspices of the multi-party banner.

The ANC is accusing the DA of essentially offering South Africa's sovereignty on a silver silver platter in these letters, by requesting that partners in democracy should engage with consequences in the run-up to the election.

"We deal with regional organisations, continental organisations and global organisations, and we invite them, we think it's quite disingenous. We will want our elections to be transparent, to be well handled as they have been," said ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa.

ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri added that the country's soveregnity is not up for for sale to any country - whether from the west or the east.

"The notion that in African countries elections are only considered credible when observed by Europeans and Americans is a clear example of party-nalistic imperalisim. Despite our impeccable track record of runnning free and fair elections in South Africa, we have never sought to comment on the elections in the west even when their own citizens question their credibility of their electoral processes.

"This plea is a clear attempt to bring about a regime change disguised in opportunistic language."
