SA Stats Council threatens to resign over lack of funding

Board members of the South African Statistics Council are threatening to resign if Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) is not adequately funded in the upcoming budget.

The Council says this is due to a cut in the budget of Stats SA, as well as the decision by government to freeze all posts.

"The vacancy rate has climbed to almost 20%; every 5th position is vacant, and many staff are thus taking on their own job and work that should be done by others; working a 6 or even 7 day week.

"The freeze on posts means that no promotions are possible, and no vacancies can be filled," says Council chairperson Professor David Everatt.

The Council estimates that at least R250 million would be required to continue operations going into next year's five year census.

"Really the bill is around R250 million if that comes. The jobs freeze should be lifted so that we can be able to handle the census," says Everatt.
