The week-long strike by unions at South African Airways (SAA) is set to come to an end after the South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) accepted a new wage deal.

The Council for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCM) made the announcement on Friday.

The CCMA said in a statement they are pleased that the wage dispute has been resolved.

On Friday morning, SACCA signalled that the end of the strike may be in sight, saying it was taking the new offer to its members to get a mandate on the strike action.

According to Zazi Nsibanyoni-Mugambi, SACCA President, the issue of insourcing had proven to be a potential deal-breaker.

"Our biggest issue, despite increases, was insourcing.," says Nsibanyoni-Mugambi.

According to the CCMA's statement, the mediated process that was reconvened on Wednesday resulted in an agreement being signed at midday on Friday.

"The CCMA will also ensure that it will continue to provide post-dispute support to the parties in order to assist them to work through some of the identified underlying issues and challenges," it said.

The CCMA Director,  Cameron Morajane commended the parties for "remaining in the process and restoring some measure of stability."

The National Transport Movement also confirmed on Friday that they have accepted an offer of 5.9% from SAA.

According to Mashudu Raphetha, the wage increase will be effective from February 2020.
