SABC Unions to start striking from next week
Unions at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) are set to embark on another strike at the public broadcaster over the ongoing section 189 process.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) and the Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers Union (BEMAWU) met on Wednesday and decided to take to the streets.
The SABC is currently in the process of retrenchments that will affect more than 300 employees.
CWU spokesperson, Aubrey Tshabalaba, says the unions have not received any feedback from the SABC Board, over concerns that additional workers are now also receiving redundancy notices.
“As of Monday CWU, members met and resolved to embark on industrial action and on Wednesday CWU and BEMAWU leadership met and we concluded that it will be a joined action,” says Tshabalala.
He has added they are now discussions their plan of action to ensure members adhere to the Adjusted Level 3 lockdown regulations that prohibit the gathering of large crowds.
The unions will reveal the program of action on Friday.
“But definitely there will be a strike at SABC by next week, we are mobilizing all our forces within the SABC and we are also engaging the non-unionized workers to also join the strike because it is all in our interest,” says Tshabalala.
