The party's Gauteng provincial secretary Jacob Mamabolo says the country's official opposition has lost its identity.

This comes after former DA leader Helen Zille, who was succeeded as party leader by Mmusi Maimane four years ago. threw her name into the hat to be the next chairperson of the party's federal council.

The FedEx chair is responsible for running the party on a day-to-day basis.

She will contest four candidates - Athol Trollip, Thomas Walters, Mike Waters - for the position.

Mamabolo doesn’t believe the party will survive its current crisis.

"The DA is dying everyday. We should let it rest because it will not survive this crisis

"When a party has no ideological principles, it is a party that is fast realising that its days are numbered. It has reached its ceiling and when you see people like Helen Zille trying to go back you can now see that the party has exhausted itself. We should let it rest in peace."
