Saftu suspends 4 office bearers over Vavi letter
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) has suspended four office bearers for the issuing of a letter informing the general-secretary Zwelinzima Vavi of his pending suspension.
The federation's president Mac Chavalala, 2nd deputy president Thabo Matsose, deputy general-secretary Moleko Phakedi, and national treasurer Motshwari Lecogo have all been suspended.
They accused Vavi of misconduct.
National executive member Vusi Ntshangase said the four brought the federation into disrepute.
“Following an intense and robust discussion amongst delegates on the constitutionality of the National office bearers’ decision, a motion was moved to suspend with immediate effect the four NOBs of Saftu that orchestrated the Vavi suspension.
“In the process, they brought the federation into disrepute, the federation was subjected to embarrassment, the Vavi suspension was mischievous and malicious.”
Vavi said he does not feel vindicated by the decision.
“We are not feeling vindicated in any way we are not happily rejoicing; we believe this matter should have not arisen had we focused on campaigns, on building the organisations.”
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), which is the largest trade union in the federation and the country, abstained during the vote on the suspension of the four.
