Saftu: Public sector vacancies exacerbating poor services

The South African Federation of Trade Unions has expressed concern over what is called an alarming number of vacant posts in national and provincial governments.
The trade union federation says there are more than 180,000 vacancies in public service.
The posts remain unfilled despite the government’s struggle to deliver basic services to people around the country.
Saftu’s national spokesperson Trevor Shaku says some of the vacancies are in departments which are critical to people’s everyday lives.
“Education has 74,808 vacant posts across all nine provinces. Healthcare has 35,086 unfilled vacancies, social development has 3,162 vacant posts, and the police have 23,111 vacant posts nationally".
“Understaffing has put wardens at risk of attacks by inmates, as they can be overpowered due to low numbers.”
