The vaccine is listed for emergency use by the World Health Organisation (WHO) but wasn’t among the products under consideration in SA.

The country’s regulatory body is now reviewing three applications including China’s Sinopharm, Sinovac and Russia’s Sputnik V.

“Sahpra will now begin evaluating the data is assessing the efficacy of the vaccine,” says Sahpra CEO Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela.

So far, only Pfizer and the Johnson & Johnson vaccines are in use - with more than 2 million doses administered since the roll out in February.

It’s understood no application has been received by Sahpra for Moderna.

This as the country remains in the grip of a third wave of infections.
