SAHRC probing ‘homophobia’ at Hoërskool DF Malan
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The South African Human Rights Commission has launched an investigation into allegations of homophobia at Hoërskool DF Malan in Bellville.

"We received numerous complaints from the public alleging that a group of LGBTI and GNC learners at the school were on 7 June subjected to homophobic discrimination and hate speech by fellow learners and staff of the school," says commissioner André Gaum.
The pupils were apparently prevented from celebrating Pride Month.
"It is further alleged that the principal, in response to the incident, has banned further gatherings of LGBTI and GNC students in support of Pride Month on school premises," adds Gaum.

The commission will call an urgent meeting with the principal and the Western Cape Department of Education.
