Eskom has  started cutting power to five municipalities who have outstanding debt this morning.

Power will be cut from 6.00am until 8.00am and 5.00pm until 7.30 pm every day until municipalities settle their debt or make payment arrangements with the power utility.

Supply interruption was suspended at another five municipalities who made payments or where payment plans were agreed upon.

Salga's Mohammed Lorgat says they do not believe cutting the power to municipalities is the correct thing to do.

"The whole purpose of the meeting is to discuss the issue of the municipalities who have these debts that are owed to Eskom and obviously and unpack the issues that are giving rise to the municipalities' inabilities to pay them," says Lorgat.
