The chairperson of the SA Medical Association has been badly wounded in a stabbing incident near King Shaka International, north of Durban.
The Health Department says Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa was attacked while he was driving home from the airport over the weekend.
Spokesperson Foster Mohale says Mzukwa, bleeding from multiple stab wounds, managed to drive himself to the nearest hospital.
"The Deputy Minister of Health Sibongiseni Dhlomo visited Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa in hospital in Durban where he's recovering from multiple stab wounds. Dr Dhlomo was very touched but at the same time glad to find Dr Mzukwa recovering well and also commended him for his heroic action.
“Dr Dhlomo believes that if Dr Mzukwa waited a little longer, his condition could've deteriorated making it impossible to save his own life."
The circumstances surrounding the attack are not known at this stage.
