The city is without a mayor after a council meeting, meant to elect a successor to Stevens Mokgalapa, collapsed on Thursday.

It is the umpteenth council sitting which failed to yield any outcomes.

The council sitting collapsed after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African National Congress (ANC) staged a walkout before the meeting could begin over the presence of council speaker Katlego Mathebe.

Both parties have failed to remove Mathebe despite tabling several motions of no confidence against her.

SAMWU Regional Secretary Mpho Tladinyane says the collapse of the meeting meant councillors failed to pass the adjustment budget.

“Currently the city is facing some serious constraints to the extent that, as we are dealing with the budget, we have to adjust it downwards by almost a billion rand.

“The city is supposed to be having in its reserves salaries for the next three months but that is not the case. We only have money to sustain us for a month.”
