SAMWU leadership battle headed to court

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) in Gauteng says the union's current national leadership led by Pule Molalenyane is corrupt and needs to be removed.

SAMWU held a media briefing on Thursday on the current state of the union.

Gauteng chairperson Nkhethani Muthavhi says the union has been captured.

"The Pule Molalenyane faction is captured by SALGA. Last year they were taken to Italy, to negotiate the disciplinary code and salaries. They signed an agreement on the disciplinary code without a mandate from the workers," said Muthavhi.

Molalenyane and two other top officials were removed from the Union in 2016 following allegations of corrupt behaviour.

Allegations have also been made that Molalenyane has opened a bank account where money from the union is being challenged for his personal use.

The matter will be heard next week.

SAMWU's Johannesburg Chairperson, Vuyani Singonzo says following the court proceedings they will pursue criminal charges.

"Criminal cases are going to be instituted against those who might have squandered the monies of the union and they are going to have to account," said Singonzo.

Molalenyane was not available for comment.
