The South African Military Health Services has been roped in to assist the Gauteng health department in conducting autopsies at state hospitals.
This amid a strike by pathology workers in Gauteng.
The Department of Health's Khutos Rabothata says contingency measures have been put in place to try and contain the impact of the strike action.
He says the military officials will be deployed to affected facilities to clear the backlogs caused by the strike.
"They will be working around the clock to try and ease the backlog especially in areas like Germiston, Diepkloof and Hillbrow.
"We have a backlog of around 200 and the officers from the Military Health Services will help in clearing this backlog,” Rabothata says.
The MEC for Health in Gauteng, Gwen Ramokgopa, has shared the contingency meassures with the affected families.
"She also shared with them the contingency plans to ensure they are not further inconvenienced so they can bury their loved ones," he says.
