SANDF in Mozambique: More than 50 South Africans accounted for so far

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has been deployed to the northern areas of Mozambique to evacuate South Africans who want to return home.

Heavily armed militants have taken control of the coastal town of Palma, forcing thousands of terrified residents and foreigners to flee. 

 

One South African was killed in the attack of 10 days ago and several others accounted,

Ramaphosa spoke to SABC TV News outside the Methodist Church in Soweto on Friday, where he addressed a limited number of congregants who gathered for the Easter Friday service.

 

"We remain involve in securing the safety of our people in Mozambique," said Ramaphosa.

 

He added that he is receiving constant updates about the situation.

 

"The SANDF is working very hard to secure the safety of our people".

Meanwhile, the SANDF has confirmed that more than 50 South Africans who were reported missing through the South African High Commission in Maputo have been accounted for.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans, Siphiwe Dlamini, has confirmed soldiers have not been deployed to Mozambique to be part of any active fighting.

“The South African National Defence Force continues to provide logistical support to the

South African High Commission in Maputo with regard to consular services, including

repatriation. This is the extent of the engagement of the South African National Defence

Force in Mozambique,” says Dlamini.
