SAPS need to work harder to rid itself of bad apples, says expert

Independent crime and policing expert Johan Burger says the South African Police Service is unable to hold officers accountable for misconduct and criminal offences.

A video is doing the rounds on social media, showing a member of the public sitting in the backseat of a Sunnyside police van, promoting his herbal products.
The video went viral after it was posted on social media platform TikTok.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni had instructed the station commander of Sunnyside Park Police Station to investigate the matter and take disciplinary action against any member who allowed such conduct inside a police vehicle.
Burger said the police should work harder to eradicate officers who are giving the blue badge a bad image.
“What the police should do is work much harder to eradicate the kind of police officers like these from the police agency. If they want to save the general image of the service, they have to get rid of the officers who do not belong in the service and act against them.”
