South African Revenue Service (Sars) has fired its legal head Refiloe Mokoena in connection with an alleged VAT repayment to the controversial Gupta family.

The tax authority made the announcement on Friday.
Sars spokesperson Sicelo Mkosi says the decision to terminate her contract was taken after a disciplinary hearing chaired by a senior counsel from the Johannesburg Bar.

"SARS has accepted the chairperson recommendation of the dismissal of Ms Mokoena and also that termination is with immediate effect as of today.
"This follows the disciplinary hearing which has been taking place all along.”
