Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba has confirmed the province’s first confirmed case of monkeypox in Hoedspruit
The case, which was confirmed by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), brings the national total to three.
The latest patient is a 42-year-old tourist from Switzerland.
"The case presented with signs and symptoms such as rash, lymphadenopathy, muscle ache, and fatigue,” says Ramathuba.
“We are calling for calm. We can confirm that the case is an outpatient, currently isolating, and requires no admission. Three contacts have already been identified and none of them have developed signs thus far."
This comes after two cases were confirmed last month in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Monkeypox is usually a mild disease manifesting as blisters on the skin, it is usually mild and self-limiting with a fatality rate of 1%.

The current outbreak is dominated by high numbers in European countries such as Spain, Germany, Portugal, France as well as the UK. The are other reported cases in USA and Canada.
