The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has increased the cash benefits for victims of the floods in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Department of Social Development’s Lumka Oliphant says they are also assisting with the provision of school uniforms to affected families.
“Sassa is providing social relief of distress in terms of food vouchers, school uniforms, and blankets. The cash benefit has been increased from R700 to R1960 where there has been a loss of belongings, and the value of the food voucher has been increased from R700 to R1 200. The agency has since issued vouchers to the value of R434 520 and R372 280 in school uniforms applications.
“The department has deployed 337 social services professionals in the affected areas, including trauma response task teams in district municipalities providing psychological support.”
Social Development deputy minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu is in the province to assess and assist some of the affected families.
