Satawu maintains axed Prasa board not fit
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) says the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) board will have to prove it is fit to hold office.
Its comments come after the North Gauteng High Court ruled that former Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters acted irrationally in removing Prasa's board.
Judge Peter Mabuse said in his scathing judgment, the minister's decision was unreasonable and disproportionate.
The judge has set aside the decision and reinstated the board.
He also ordered the transport ministry to pay the costs of the case.
However, the ministry could still challenge the ruling.
Satawu deputy general secretary Zacharia Mosothoane says all court orders must be respected.
"We respect the court decision. However, it does not change our position. The things that must be changed at Prasa must be changed. The board is not fit to execute their duties. Their reinstatement does not change the status quo, unless they begin to do things differently."
He says Satawu hopes to meet with the board to address some of the key challenges facing Prasa.
Axed Prasa board chair Popo Molefe feels he's been vindicated by the court ruling.
