SCA dismisses coffin assault duo’s appeal

A bid by convicted coffin assault pair Willem Oosthuizen and Theo Jackson to have their conviction and sentence overturned has failed.
It is back to jail for Ootshuizen and Jackson who were found guilty of attempted murder by the High Court sitting in Middelburg.
The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) dismissed an appeal application by the pair to have their conviction and respective sentences of 11 and 14 years overturned.

A video of the two men forcing Victor Mlotshwa into a coffin and threatened to pour petrol over him went viral in 2016.
The incident occurred on a farm in Mpumalanga.
“The presiding officers stated there is no reasonable prospects of success because even if their sentences are reduces, it would be a custodial sentence. He also stated that there is no compelling reasons why appeal should be granted,” says the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Monica Nyuswa.
