School takes action against learners following videos of violence
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi has welcomed the decision by Norkem Park High School to expel two pupils involved in violent behaviour.
Lesufi visited the Kempton Park high school yesterday, after video footage of fights between learners emerged on social media.
The videos clearly depict school learners engaged in physical altercations.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says the school identified 10 girls who were suspended with immediate effect.
"Two of the boys who were identified as bringing friends or people from the outside coming to fight in the school environment, were recommended for expulsion", Mabona explained.
Mabona says there are a number of other issues at the school that need urgent attention.
"There were about eighteen learners who were identified for ill-discipline, either selling drugs or found doing things contrary to what the conduct dictates".
MEC Lesufi told learners at the school if they witness any ill-discipline they must report it to school management.
Meanwhile, arrangements are underway for a meeting between the school governing body and parents.
"Parents must undertake responsibility for their children. They must assist to instill discipline in their children", Mabona said.
