Scores of trucks stuck on N10 in Eastern Cape amid protest

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula arrived in Middelburg in the Eastern Cape on Monday to try and end an impasse that has blocked the N10 for more than 24 hours.
Scores of trucks have been stuck on that stretch of the highway in both directions since early Sunday after local drivers staged a protest over the employment of foreign truck drivers.
Provincial Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose says Mbalula is accompanied by MEC for Transport Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe in the hope of finding a solution to the problem.
Binqose says no trucks can get through.
"Law enforcement officers are on the ground, and that road effectively remains closed to truck drivers, however for small vehicles, there is a bypass that has been created and they are able to pass through.
"However, we'd love to call upon them to avoid that stretch of the road at all costs because even the bypass is not moving as quickly as we would like because of the congestion."
