The death toll from the torrential rain now stands at 5.

The thunderstorm, which largely affected eThekwini and the north coast, flooded homes and washed away roads.

Several areas were left without power and water.

There was also mud and debris left on major roadways like the M4.

Several families, mostly in Verulam, Phoenix, and Tongaat had to be rescued.

KZN Cooperative Governance spokesperson Siboniso Mngadi says the largely affected municipalities are eThekwini, KwaDukuza and Ndwedwe.

Mngadi says all fatalities were recorded in Durban.

"Two people have been recorded to have passed away in Folweni, one in Umlazi and two in Tongaat, where the structure collapsed.

"We still have two people who are missing, they have been washed away in Tongaat. The heavy rains caused severe damage in eThekwini north where some of the roads have been closed. We will continue to do assessments.

Mngadi says their preliminary reports indicate that over 1000 people were affected in eThekwini.

In Kwadukuza, some 300 people were affected.

Mop-up operations were underway on Monday.
