Between the period of March and June, the sector added 39,000 jobs, reaching almost 10,1 million.

The latest Quarterly Employment Statistics survey indicated there was a year-on-year net increase of 104,000 jobs.

The growth in community services, business services, mining, and electricity drove the increase in employment.

At the same time, industries such as manufacturing, transport, trade, and construction experienced a decline in employment.

"The number of full-time workers decreased by 25 000 in the quarter ending June 2023, dropping from 8 816 000 in March 2023 to 8 791 000,” said the survey’s director, Matlapane Masupye.

“This decrease was mainly attributed to the decline in full-time employment in community services (-11 000), manufacturing (-10 000), construction (-6 000) and transport (-1 000)."

"The electricity and business services industries showed no change in this quarter. However, some industries recorded an increase in employment, such as mining (2 000) and trade (1 000)."
