The suspects, between the age of 28 and 50, were arrested on Tuesday.

The hawks and SAPS teams in Gauteng received information about suspects who are allegedly involved in hijackings, targeting courier vans on the N3 highway.

Hawks spokesperson Bonnie Nxumalo says the information received indicated that the suspects were using a VW Polo and a Nissan Almera.

“Information was operationalised and the team proceeded to the highway where they discovered that the suspects had allegedly hijacked a Toyota Quantum on the N3 highway, Germiston. The hijacked vehicle was spotted on the N3 in Alberton near the Heidelberg off-ramp, escorted by two-vehicle,” says Nxumalo.

Nxumalo says all vehicles found were intercepted and the team rescued the minibus taxi driver and his passenger who were allegedly held hostage.

A Polo from the suspects was linked to a robbery case where a courier van was robbed in Mondeor in October.

“All suspects will be charged with carjacking, possession of suspected stolen property and kidnapping and will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

Investigation to link the suspects to other robberies continues.”
