Seven people killed in Modimolle multiple-vehicle crash

Preliminary investigations cite mechanical problems as a possible cause of the accident.

Seven people have died and one was seriously injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on the N1 near Modimolle on Friday night. 


According to the provincial  the Department of Transport and Community Safety's Mike Maringa, preliminary investigations cite mechanical problems as a possible cause of the accident. 


"A trailer allegedly broke from a bakkie and was hit at the rear end by the trailing Hyndai Sedan," said Maringa .

 Two other vehicles, including an Isuzu Bakkie that was pulling a trailer, collided with a Reanult sedan. 


"Four occupants in the sedan were killed instantly and two passengers from the bakkie were also certified dead on the scene," said Maringa . 


Two people were rushed to Modimolle hospital and one subsequently succumbed to their injuries. 


Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya has sent messages of condolences to the victims' families and is urging motorists to continuously check  the condition of their vehicles and to drive within the prescribed speed limits.
