Forecaster Celeste Fourie says there is between a 60 and 80 percent chance of thundershowers from Wednesday until Friday.

“Today (Wednesday) we have a 60 to 80 percent chance of showers and thundershowers over Gauteng and Limpopo this is due to a bigger synoptic weather system we have in play.

“Looking at the warnings we have issued for Gauteng today we are expecting severe thunderstorms leading to localised flooding over the susceptible areas of majority of Gauteng as well as the south-eastern parts of Limpopo.”

Fourie says a yellow level two warning has been issued for Gauteng and Limpopo.

“Currently for Gauteng and the south-eastern part of Limpopo we do have a yellow level two warning out for severe thunderstorms today that is leading to localised flooding.

“Looking at our average maximum temperatures expected for the two provinces in Limpopo we are expecting to reach over a maximum above average of about 28 to 30 degrees Celsius and in Gauteng we are also looking at temperatures ranging from 28 to 30 degrees Celsius.”

More rains are to be expected in the southern parts of the province compared to the north side.

“Currently we do have thunderstorms active in the southern parts of Gauteng today. the southern parts can expect quite a bit more rain than the northern parts today, we are expecting the southern part to reach about 30-40 millimeters of rain in places and then in the northern parts 20-30 millimeters of rain can be expected.”

A level 5 warning has been issued for the extreme parts of KwaZulu-Natal, says Fourie.

“An 80 % chance of rain is expected in the KZN region as well as the eastern parts of the Mpumalanga region, with the southern parts of the region expecting a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers.

“For the western part of KZN we do have a yellow level 2 issued and in the extreme parts of KZN we are expecting a yellow level 5 warning.”
