The public spat between Sisulu and Zondo was preceded by an opinion piece by the senior minister.

Sisulu’s opinion piece was published in IOL at the end of last week, questioning the rule of law in the country.

Zondo unexpectedly responded to the opinion piece, slamming Sisulu for casting aspersions on the judiciary - especially on the work of black judges.

Less than hour after Zondo’s media briefing where he told journalists he hoped action would be taken against the minister, Sisulu took to social media to respond.

“I have noted the comments made by the Acting Chief Justice Zondo and they will be engaged with at an appropriate time in an appropriate platform.

“I am in consultation with my legal team,” she added.

The tit-for-tat spar has also garnered responses from political parties, including the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters.

The DA wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene by calling for a retraction by Sisulu, while the EFF has criticised Zondo for “trying to outlaw political commentary by those who reside within the legislature".
