The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) says it is prepared to expand its investigation into alleged theft during the construction of Medupi and Kusile.

The Sunday Times reported that R139 billion was stolen from Eskom during the building of the two power stations. The paper reported that the unit is looking at 11 contractors as part of its investigation.

“If there is a need to extend our current proclamation then we will certainly do so,” says the unit’s spokesperson Nazreen Pandor.

“The investigation is currently ongoing so there isn't a deadline but we are doing our best to insure we are investigating everything and where necessary we are making referrals so we don’t wait for the final report to be issued.”

Minister of Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan recently told MP’s that the Medupi and Kusile power stations were badly designed and constructed.

He admitted that Eskom’s two new power plants are no performing at optimum levels.

"We are addressing these issues. We will have an independent audit done on what it is exactly that's going on, so we put Eskom back on track and give South Africans - sooner rather than later - the assurance that we have an entity that is able to give us the energy security that we require.”
