Six to appear in NW court for defrauding UIF

Six people are set to appear in a North West court following their arrest for allegedly defrauding the Unemployment Insurance Fund of R2 million.

The suspects, who are facing charges of fraud, money laundering and theft, are set to appear in the Mahikeng District Court on Monday.
The suspects were arrested by the Hawks in Saturday.
They include two former employees of the Department of Employment and Labour.
UIF Commissioner Teboho Maruping says several officials from the Mahikeng and Klerksdorp Labour Centres have already been dismissed or suspended.
“According to a preliminary investigation, the suspects operated a syndicate that acted as a recruitment agency that recruited unemployed persons in the province for among other things, job opportunities.
“The unsuspecting job applicants were then made to complete UIF claim forms as former employees of Impala Platinum Mine as well as Sibanye Ashanti Gold Mine for unemployment benefits. Thereafter the suspects had the claims processed, resulting in the UIF being defrauded of over R2 million,” said Maruping.
