The country will move into level 2 at midnight on Monday with several amendments to the regulations.

Tobacco products and alcohol are among the goods that will be back on the shelves.

Gyms and health clubs will also be re-open for the first time in 5 months.

On Monday, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma announced that social events and weddings could now also take place but are capped at 50 guests at a time.

“This includes visits to friends and family so long as there are not more than 10 visitors at a time,” said Dlamini-Zuma.

President warns of return of strict lockdown regulations if Level 2 leads to 'second wave' of infections

Dear Fellow South African, At midnight tonight, our country will move to alert level 2 in our response to the coronavirus pandemic. This will come as a relief to all South Africans who have had to live under stringent restrictions for the last five months.

Government has been under pressure to set out regulations to ensure increased economic activity in a way that will not cause an uncontrollable spike in Covid-19 infections.

Under level 2, alcohol can be sold for off-site consumption Monday to Thursday between 9am and 5pm.

On-site consumption of booze is also allowed, subject to the 10pm curfew.

Dlamini-Zuma warned that a lack of adherence to regulations could lead to a spike in Covid-19 cases.

“There’s a noticeable decrease, particularly in the larger provinces the Western Cape, Gauteng, (and) the Eastern Cape. However, KwaZulu-Natal still provides some challenges, but we hope it will decline soon as well,” she added.

“It is for this reason that we have lifted the restriction on a number of areas but have maintained the curfew between 10pm and 4am.”

Inter-provincial travel is also permitted under level 2 regulations.
