Some 900 taxis to be scrapped in Joburg, replaced by Rea Vaya buses
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
The MMC for Transport in Johannesburg Funzi Ngobeni has signed an agreement with taxi associations to operate Rea Vaya buses from the Johannesburg CBD to Alexandra, Greenstone and Sandton.

The agreement will see some 940 minibus taxis removed from the route.
It will now be a dedicated bus route.
Funzi says the city has agreed to pay compensation to the taxi associations.
“This will ultimately lead to the cancellation of all operating licenses attached to the affected taxis. The city is transforming the taxi industry through section 41 of the National Land Transport Act 5 of 2009 which promotes economic empowerment while restructuring transport operators to discourage monopolies and therefore seeing the realisation of the owners of the affected minibus taxis becoming shareholders and managing Rea Vaya buses through a registered company.”
