The deaths were confirmed by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize in a statement on Friday morning.

"This morning we wake South Africans up with sad news, that we now have our first deaths resulting from the COVID-19.

"These two deaths occurred in the Western Cape. One at a private hospital and the other at a public hospital," said Mkhize.

Mkhize is expected to give further details on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

He will also give an update on the number of infections the country has recorded thus far, which he says has "tipped the 1000 mark".
