Monday marks 39 years since the death of the leader of the Black Consciousness Movement, Stephen (Steve) Bantu Biko.

The anti-apartheid struggle icon died on this day in 1977 while in police custody.
Biko was sought by police following the Soweto Uprising in 1976, in which he and the Black Consciousness Movement played a significant role.
He was arrested at a roadblock in Port Elizabeth on 18 August 1977.
Biko suffered a severe head injury while being interrogated at the Walmer Police Station, in a suburb of Port Elizabeth.
