He addressed the nation on Monday morning on the measures to tackle crime which has exploded in a series of horrific incidents in the past few weeks.

"There are various motives, some motives we are yet to confirm. It looks like it's around extortion and collections of monies that we are still investigating. There is no tavern that is linked to one another."

More than a dozen people were killed in separate shooting incidents at taverns in Soweto and Pietermaritzburg.

Just this weekend seven people were killed in a shooting at a tuck shop in Mariannhill, west of Durban.

Meanwhile Police Minister Bheki Cele, speaking on the Krugersdorp gang rape where eight women were assaulted, assured South Africans that police stations are well equipped with rape kits and resources to deal with sexual crimes.

"The top 30 stations that have high rape and abuse of women and even given extra cash to look after that so that they don't go through red tape and all that. We can sit here and unequivocally say we rape kits."
