Spazas torched in Delmas following child’s death

Mpumalanga police were monitoring the situation in Delmas on Friday following the torching of two foreign-owned spaza shops.

Community members went on rampage on Thursday evening after the death of a six-year-old boy from suspected food poisoning.


The child died after eating biscuits he allegedly bought from a local spaza shop.


Police spokesperson Magonseni Nkosi says two suspects have since been arrested.


"The victim allegedly came home and complained about stomach pains. His parents observed that the victim had white foam around his mouth.


"It is alleged that the victim reported that he ate some biscuits bought from a local spaza shop. Thereafter, he was rushed to hospital and unfortunately lost his life.


"As a result, some community members went on rampage and torched two spaza shops belonging to foreign nationals.


"The police has since heightened visibility in the area meanwhile two suspects, were arrested for public violence yesterday afternoon.”


The suspects are expected to appear in the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Monday.
