The Commission has requested another 24 months - from March 2018 - to investigate claims of state capture, fraud and corruption in the public sector.

According to a statement released by the secretary of the Commission, Dr Khutso de Wee, the recommendation of the Public Protector that it should complete its work within 180 days - is inadequate.

The High Court in Pretoria granted an order which compels stakeholders to make representations to court as to why the period of 180 days should not be extended.

If confirmed, the commission will effectively be able to convene until 2020.

Judge Pieter Rabie said President Cyril Rampahosa, political parties and other civil organisations involved in the probe must head to court on October 2 to present their arguments.

"If the extension is confirmed on 2 October we will be able to really focus on our work without having to be concerned that in a few months' time the Commission may have to stop its work because the 180 days will be up," believes Chairperson Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

The much-anticipated hearings are expected to start in August.
