Recapping crime statistics assists the country in having a much clearer picture of the crime situation in South Africa, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) said on Thursday.
"Popcru appreciates the recap of the crime statistics for the past nine financial years as this can only assist us in having a much clearer picture of the crime situation in the country," it said in a statement.
"The general decrease in the statistics demonstrates that the men and women whose majority belong to this union are still committed to their core mandate of keeping South Africans and their properties safe.
"We take into cognisance that there are increases in several categories," the union said.
More needed to be done to ensure the safety of citizens.
"We say to each one of the 198,000 staff members of SA Police Service that the battle to keep South Africa safe and secure continues."
Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa released the 2012/13 crime statistics in Pretoria on Thursday.
