Stats SA's report on birth registrations and occurrences of live births reveals that more than 1 million births were registered in South Africa in 2021.
The report was published on their website Monday morning.
According to the report, 949 757 of the 1 087 526 birth registrations occurred in 2021 while 137 769 were in the previous years.
Stats SA said there was an increased number of teenage mothers in 2021.
“A total of 45 257 births were from mothers aged 17 years and younger and of these, 42 were births from mothers between the ages of 11 and 12,” they said in a statement.
“Information about fathers remains the biggest challenge. In 2021, no reliable information on fathers could be provided due to a high proportion of births registered (more than 60%) without the details of fathers.”
