Strains of Listeriosis found at Joburg food outlet

The City of Joburg says health practitioners have discovered strains of Listeria at a food outlet on Friday.

The City is awaiting lab confirmation after samples were submitted to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).
A total of 764 Listeriosis cases have been reported across the country.
212 patients have been diagnosed with 19 deaths in Johannesburg.

The MMC for Health and Social Development, Mpho Phalatse, says is trying it best to contain the disease and that there is no reason for residents to panic.
Phalatse has urged residents to remain vigilant.
"Residents should continue adhering to food safety guidelines and report to their nearest clinic if they start experiencing symptoms associated with the disease, especially pregnant women, babies below the age of 28 days, senior citizens above the age of 65."
