Strike leads to removal of shark nets on KZN beaches
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The City of uMhlathuze has warned beach goers not to swim in the ocean after shark nets were removed amid a strike by workers.
Affected beaches include Port Dunford and Alkanstrand beach.
The City of uMhlathuze’s Mdu Ncalane says the nets were allegedly removed by disgruntled workers from the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board.
"We are a client to the Sharks board which is public entity that oversees the marine life and safety at our beaches. All Sharks Safety gear including Shark Safety Nets have been removed until the KZN Sharks Board informs the City of uMhlathuze that their labour disputes are resolved," says Ncalane.
The City of uMhlathuze is now spreading awareness to its customers warning them of the danger.
Ncalane says not only have they sent bulk messages but lifeguards will be stationed at beaches, to warn beach goers.
