The zoo obtained an interdict on Friday against the illegal strike by workers belonging to the municipal workers union Samwu.

Jenny Moodley from Johannesburg City Parks said volunteers have been helping out after the zoo was closed on Friday.

"There are huge contingency measures in place to address full operations at the zoo today. We've had the zoo operating fully over the weekend as well," she said.

Moodley said there was no longer a need for more volunteers.

Meanwhile, workers who do not return to work could face disciplinary procedures.

Workers embarked on a strike over salaries.

We would like to thank all the overwhelming support from the volunteers that have come forward to assist during the strike. We appreciate your time, enthusiasm and care.
