Supra Mahumapelo laughs off ANC calls for renewal, appeals 5-year suspension

The embattled former North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo says he will appeal his 5-year suspension from the African National Congress (ANC).

This comes after the party’s Provincial Disciplinary Committee (PDC) announced its decision on Wednesday.
Mahumapelo and acting provincial ANC Women’s League secretary Bitsa Lekonpane were found guilty of misconduct.
The pair were accused of sowing divisions in the party for allegedly advising a local mayor to defy the party's instruction to resign and for running parallel events during the campaigns for by-elections in some of the municipalities.
But Mahumapelo slammed the decision during an address to his supporters in Mahikeng on Thursday, saying the Interim Provincial Committee’s energy was misdirected.
“If the IPC was saying let’s sit down and discuss who controls the minerals of the North West, let’s sit down and discuss.
“But they’re busy suspending people for talking to other people. They don’t even know what was said in that conversation but they’re suspending that person,” he told a cheering crowd.
Mahumapelo accused the governing party of contradicting itself.
“They preach renewal in the ANC but today they are charging us, the same people.”
The two suspensions come amid the heightened calls for the party to implement its controversial step aside policy against leaders accused of wrongdoing.
