A 29-year-old suspect appeared in Kempton Park Regional Court on Friday on charges of illegal dealings in rhino horns.
The suspect also faces charges of contravention of the National Environmental Biodiversity Act (NEMBA) as well as Customs and Excess Act.
Hawks spokesperson, Ndivhuwo Mulamu says the suspect was arrested following a bust of a consignment at warehouse at Oliver Tambo in February.
“Upon arrival, police found eighteen pieces of rhino horns weighing about 72kilograms wrapped and concealed in boxes,” says Mulamu.
Further investigation revealed that the consignment was declared as computer scraps and destined for Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
“The suspect was positively linked and identified as Kelebogile Lebogang Makamu which resulted in the warrant of arrest issued,” explains Mulamu.
The suspect was arrested at his residence in Kopanong Section, Tembisa on Thursday.
He was granted R20 000 bail.
The case has been postponed to 14 September 2021 for further investigation.
